The IMAX Effect

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey reignited an unusual debate.

Not about the screenplay.

Not about the performances.

About fidelity.

Although the film was released worldwide, only 41 IMAX 70mm cinemas were capable of screening it in the format Nolan intended. Those theatres generated approximately $6.3 million during opening weekend alone, averaging more than $150,000 per screen, as audiences travelled across countries, and in some cases continents, to experience the film as it was designed to be seen.

It is tempting to see this as a story about cinema.

It may be a story about economics instead.

For decades, technological progress followed a familiar pattern. As distribution became cheaper, the value of content itself declined. Music became streamable. Films became available on demand. Information became searchable.

Artificial intelligence is accelerating the same shift for knowledge.

A doctoral student can interrogate decades of literature in minutes. A researcher can compare statistical methodologies before opening specialist software. Complex mathematical proofs, programming challenges and methodological questions that once required hours of consultation can now receive an intelligent first response almost instantly.

None of this replaces original discovery.

It does, however, alter the economics of expertise.

As access to knowledge becomes increasingly abundant, the source of competitive advantage begins to migrate elsewhere.

Perhaps this is where higher education now finds itself.

For centuries, universities excelled at creating, preserving and transmitting knowledge.

Today, their distinctive value may increasingly lie in the experiences through which knowledge is encountered, challenged and applied.

Research universities have understood this for decades.

A student walking through MIT.nano is not simply learning about advanced manufacturing or quantum engineering. They are entering an environment where new knowledge is being created. A medical student in a teaching hospital is not simply studying medicine. They are participating in the practice of it.

The same principle extends far beyond research.

At Franklin University Switzerland, Academic Travel, the University's flagship programme, moves courses beyond the classroom into the places they study. Students explore sustainability on a coffee plantation in Costa Rica, examine diplomacy in Geneva, analyse financial markets in London, and study Roman art and archaeology in Pompeii as integral components of the curriculum. Context is no longer supplementary to learning. It becomes part of the learning itself.

The implications extend beyond international travel.

They reach into curriculum design, assessment and pedagogy. The same syllabus can produce profoundly different educational outcomes depending on how it is experienced. Some faculty members transform a seminar into an intellectual journey, weaving together history, evidence and debate until students become active participants in the construction of knowledge. Others communicate the same material with equal academic rigour but far less immersion.

In an age when information is increasingly ubiquitous, the quality of the learning experience itself may become one of a university's greatest differentiators.

Throughout history, technological progress has rarely eliminated value. It has redistributed it.

As communication became instantaneous, trust became more valuable.

As manufacturing became automated, craftsmanship commanded a premium.

If artificial intelligence continues to reduce the cost of accessing knowledge, universities may need to rethink more than technology adoption. They may need to reconsider curricula, pedagogy, experiential learning and the environments in which intellectual transformation occurs.

Christopher Nolan's audience did not travel for a screenplay.

They travelled for an experience they believed could not be faithfully reproduced.

The same question may now confront higher education.

At a time when artificial intelligence is making knowledge more accessible, international mobility is becoming more complex, and the economics of studying abroad are under increasing scrutiny, universities may need to ask themselves a more fundamental question.

Is the value they offer something students can increasingly access from anywhere, or something that can only be experienced by being there?

The answer may shape not only the future of international education, but also what makes a university worth crossing the world for.
