The Longest View

The EdArchitect extends its deepest condolences to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the Al Thani family, the people of Qatar, and all those mourning the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir.

This edition of The Long View is dedicated to his memory.

Some leaders are remembered for the offices they held. Others for the decisions they made. A rare few are remembered for the future they imagined.

His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani belonged to that rare group.

From 1995 to 2013, he guided a period of significant national development. Among the many legacies of his leadership, one continues to resonate deeply with the global education community: a steadfast belief in the transformative power of education, research and human potential.

Together with Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, he established Qatar Foundation in 1995, laying the foundations for an institution that today brings together more than 50 entities across education, research, innovation and community development. For countless students, educators and researchers, that vision continues to create opportunities that extend far beyond a single generation.

Numbers tell the story of scale. Legacy tells the story of purpose.

The legacy is the belief that investing in education is investing in the future. That knowledge is a national asset.

That institutions built with patience, conviction and purpose can shape generations.

In education, time moves differently. A university builds its reputation over decades. A child entering school today may not become a scientist, an entrepreneur, a teacher or a national leader for another thirty years.

The greatest investments are often those whose full impact is realised long after those who first imagined them are gone.

There is an old proverb:

“A society grows great when people plant trees beneath whose shade they know they will never sit.”

Great leadership is much the same. It is the courage to build for a future that belongs to others.

Long after today's headlines have faded, there will remain places where curiosity is nurtured, ideas are exchanged, discoveries are made and young people from around the world prepare to shape tomorrow.

That may be the most enduring measure of a legacy.

His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani leaves behind more than institutions.

He leaves behind an idea: that the greatest investment a nation can make is in the potential of its people.

May he rest in peace. His legacy lives on not only in the institutions he helped establish, but in the generations of learners, educators and researchers they will continue to inspire.
