When Normal Changes
This week’s headlines suggest that Europe may have entered a new climatic normal.
According to the World Meteorological Organization, Europe is warming at approximately twice the global average, making it the fastest-warming continent on Earth. This summer alone, several countries have recorded temperatures exceeding 40°C, while successive heatwaves have prompted scientists to question whether what was once considered exceptional is quietly becoming the expected.
The science matters.
So does the word normal.
Every generation inherits assumptions about what “normal” looks like. Predictable seasons. Stable careers. Technologies that evolve gradually. Skills that remain relevant for decades.
Increasingly, those assumptions expire faster than the students learning within them.
Climate is only one example.
Artificial intelligence is reshaping entire professions. Demographic shifts are redefining labour markets. Geopolitical tensions continue to influence global supply chains and mobility. According to the World Economic Forum, nearly 40% of today’s core workplace skills are expected to change by 2030, while 63% of employers identify skills gaps as one of the greatest barriers to business transformation.
The challenge facing education is therefore larger than keeping pace with technology or responding to a changing climate.
It is preparing learners for a world where change itself has become the constant.
That requires a different definition of readiness.
Knowledge remains indispensable. But knowledge alone is no longer enough.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 identifies analytical thinking, resilience, flexibility, leadership, technological literacy and curiosity for lifelong learning among the capabilities expected to define the workforce of the future.
Increasingly, adaptability, critical thinking, collaboration, ethical judgement and the ability to continue learning throughout life are no longer complementary skills.
They are becoming strategic capabilities.
The implications extend far beyond the curriculum.
Around the world, the physical environments in which students learn are being reimagined. School architecture is becoming an educational issue in its own right.
In France, many new schools are now being designed with climate resilience in mind: greater natural ventilation, external shading, lighter materials, green roofs, planted courtyards and reduced reliance on mechanical cooling. Outdoor spaces are increasingly conceived as learning environments rather than simply playgrounds. Climate adaptation is becoming part of the design brief from the very first sketch.
Yet thousands of schools built during the rapid expansion of the 1960s and 1970s were designed for a different climate. Large south-facing windows, limited insulation and vast asphalt playgrounds that once reflected modern architecture can now contribute to overheating during periods of extreme heat.
Adapting schools, however, is not only about responding to the climate.
It is also an opportunity to rethink how learning environments serve the children within them.
As awareness and identification of neurodivergent learners continue to grow, architects, educators and policymakers are increasingly recognising that the built environment can either remove barriers or create them. In the United States, for example, the latest estimates suggest that 1 in 31 eight-year-old children are now identified as autistic, compared with 1 in 150 at the turn of the century. While much of this change reflects greater awareness and improved identification, it has also accelerated the conversation around inclusive learning environments.
Natural light, acoustics, sensory zoning, quiet spaces, intuitive wayfinding and flexible learning environments are no longer niche considerations. They are becoming integral to the design of schools that enable every learner to thrive.
The implications extend well beyond comfort.
Adapting education to a changing climate and a changing student population will require significant long-term investment. Governments and education systems will increasingly face difficult choices about whether to retrofit ageing school estates or build new facilities designed for a different environmental reality. Capital budgets, maintenance priorities and infrastructure planning are all likely to evolve alongside the needs of future generations.
The conversation about education has often focused on curriculum reform, teacher recruitment and retention, and digital transformation.
Increasingly, it may also need to include architecture, urban planning and public investment.
The challenge is not limited to infrastructure.
It also raises questions about the pace at which educational institutions themselves evolve.
Schools and universities are entrusted with responsibilities that rightly require careful governance, academic scrutiny and long-term planning. Major decisions often involve multiple stakeholders, regulatory frameworks and investment cycles measured in years rather than months.
Yet the environment surrounding them is changing at a very different speed.
In sectors such as telecommunications, continuous innovation has become a competitive necessity. Products, services and technologies are refined in rapid cycles, with organisations designed to respond quickly to changing conditions and emerging needs.
Academic rigour and organisational agility are not mutually exclusive.
The institutions most likely to thrive will be those that preserve the depth of scholarship while shortening the distance between recognising change and responding to it.
In an era where technological, environmental and societal shifts unfold in years rather than decades, the ability to respond thoughtfully, but without unnecessary delay, may become one of education’s greatest strategic advantages.
We often think of education as curriculum, teachers and examinations.
But every school building is itself a statement about what a society believes learning should look like.
Every governance model reflects assumptions about how quickly change happens.
When the world changes, buildings, policies and processes become historical records of yesterday’s assumptions.
Throughout history, education has adapted to profound societal transformations. The Industrial Revolution reshaped what children needed to learn. The digital revolution transformed how they accessed knowledge.
Today’s transformation is different.
It is not defined by a single invention or a single event.
It is defined by the accelerating pace at which familiar assumptions become obsolete.
The heat isn’t the story.
It is revealing how many assumptions about education we have left unchallenged for decades.
From the way schools are built to the way they are governed, many of our systems were designed for a different era, one with different technologies, different climates and a different understanding of how children learn and thrive.
The world has never stood still.
What has changed is the speed at which it now moves.
Perhaps that is the lesson hidden within today’s headlines.
The question is no longer whether education should prepare students for change.
It is whether every part of the education system, from what we teach and where we teach it to how quickly we adapt, can evolve at the pace demanded by a rapidly changing world.
Because if our classrooms, our campuses and even our institutions themselves must be redesigned for the future, perhaps the future has already arrived.
